Here is a paced three-to-four-day plan for Door County with kids, built around one base town so you are not racing the peninsula. Slot in the beach, the ferry, the goats and a fish boil, and leave room for the day to breathe.

The single best decision you make in Door County is to stop trying to see all of it. The peninsula runs about 70 miles on two-lane roads, and a family that bases in one town and takes short drives out will have a far better trip than one chasing the far ends. Pick Fish Creek (central, walkable, next to Peninsula State Park) or Sister Bay (a little quieter, with the goats), and build days out from there.

Day 1 · Settle inPeninsula State Park and a beach

Ease in with the park on your doorstep. Spend the morning in Peninsula State Park: drive the shore road, climb (or ramp up) Eagle Tower for the view over Green Bay, and let the kids run the easy trails. In the afternoon, drop down to Nicolet Beach, the park's calm, shallow bay beach, for a swim and a paddle-rental if you are up for it. You will need a Wisconsin State Park sticker for the day. Keep dinner easy and close; you have got bigger days coming.

Day 2 · The big outingThe Washington Island ferry

Give a full day to the island. Drive to Northport Pier at the tip of the peninsula and take the ferry across Death's Door (about 30 minutes; 2026 fares are $15 adult, $8 for kids 6–11, under 6 free). Bring the car, the island is seven miles across. Once there, Schoolhouse Beach's smooth limestone and a picnic fill an easy afternoon. It is a full half-day with travel, so do not bolt anything big onto the evening, just custard and an early night.

From our family · travelling with a one-year-old

With a baby, we treat the ferry day as the whole day and expect nothing else from it. The crossing itself is the entertainment (stand out on the open deck), naps happen in the car between stops, and we keep the island afternoon to one easy beach. Trying to add a hike or a second town on ferry day is how you get a meltdown at 5pm.

Day 3 · The greatest hitsGoats, custard and a fish boil

Slow the morning, then collect the classics. Have breakfast at Al Johnson's in Sister Bay and watch the goats on the roof. Spend the middle of the day however the weather points, another beach, a town wander, a cherry orchard in July, then book a fish boil for the evening (the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek is the classic) and arrive early for the boil-over fireball. Finish with custard at Wilson's or Not Licked Yet. That is Door County in a day.

Day 4, if you have it

A fourth day is for breathing room, not cramming. Use it to spread the first three days out, or add Cave Point County Park on the Lake Michigan side for its dramatic bluffs (a look, not a swim with little kids), a cherry-picking stop in season, or simply a slow beach day. With kids, the day you leave unplanned is often the one everyone remembers.
