Spring Break 2017 Style Guide: What to Pack for Your Beach or City Vacation

Spring break is upon us. You’ve done all the research, found the perfect place to stay, loaded the kids’ tablets with hours of entertainment for the flight and now comes…the packing [insert ominous music]. We know that often it’s up to us moms to pack for the entire family, so when it comes to our bag, we end up throwing in random pieces and hoping for the best.  Let’s try a different approach this year. Here’s a list of key pieces that will have you looking effortlessly put together on your vacay, whether you’re going to the beach or a more urban locale.

First up, what are you wearing on the plane? The goal for the airport outfit is comfort AND style – and yes both can coexist. Here are the key elements to a stylish yet comfortable travel outfit.

Fashion Sneakers

Get a perfectly polished look in the Basket Platform Pearlized from PUMA®.

Comfy shoes are a must. And these classic Puma sneaks can be worn with everything. Plus, the platform gives you extra lift without the pain of heels.

Find these cute kicks at Zappos.com.

Not-So-Skinny Jeans

skinny jeans

These perfectly relaxed skinny jeans will be your new street-style staple.

These ‘Relaxed’ skinnies from Paige let you have your cake (or preferred airline snack) and eat it without feeling like you’re going to bust out of your jeans.

Find these great jeans at Nordstrom.

Loose Tank (or Tee)

A super-soft jersey tank with a baseball hem and a small front pocket.

I have this simple boyfriend tank from LA Made in 3 colors – no joke. It is the perfect layering piece. If you prefer t-shirts, LA Made has a great pocket tee too:)

Long Cardigan

Slouchy and substantial, this long cardigan is destined to be your take-it-everywhere sweater (hello, new travel/napping buddy).

This cozy cardigan from Madewell will get a ton of mileage (pun intended) in your wardrobe, and the windowpane pattern plays well with other prints.

You can find this at LA Made Clothing.

Big Scarf

I don’t know about you, but I would much rather snuggle up in this adorable scarf from H&M than one of those airline blankets (aagh). Find it here.

If you’re going to the beach…

I have been dreaming of the beach lately…well, I’m always dreaming of the beach. But if you’re lucky enough to be heading to warmer shores, here are a few pieces that will have you looking super chic under the sun. Full disclosure, I’ve been dreaming about these too.

Swim Suit

Sisters Oleema and Kalani Miller create swimwear that reflects their love of travel, one of a kind statement pieces, and their appreciation for that perfect bikini. Mikoh Swimwear is a fusion of statement colors inspired by the world around us, luxurious fabrics, and the perfect fitting pieces. Seamless and hardware-free.

I’m usually a bikini girl myself, but I am feeling the one-piece swimsuit trend that is having a major moment right now. A bonus of this New Zealand one piece – it doubles as a top. Just throw on a maxi skirt, and you’re ready for dinner.

Cover-up

This supersoft, drapey and ideal for every vacation activity—from beach walks to casual seaside dinners.

I love a good caftan, and this one from J. Crew can take you naturally from the pool to an al fresco dinner. Get yours here.

Sunglasses

These Milky Tortoise Fashion Ladies Sunglasses are perfect for shielding your eyes while making a fashion statement. Wear these trendsetting sunglasses as the ideal accessory to the beach or wear as a daily go-to look.

Give your aviators a rest, and opt for these on-trend round tortoise shell sunnies. They’re from Target (hello, can you say bargain?) so you won’t feel too bad if they get lost at sea.

Beach Tote

Francesca’s Santo Domingo beach tote is so much more fun than a plain old straw bag.

Flowy Dress

This denim Tencel dress is the It-dress for Spring.

I just picked up this breezy little BB Dakota dress from my favorite local boutique (shout out to SHOP). It has that perfect relaxed beachy vibe.

Sun Hat

This classic boater will keep you cool & stylish all summer long.

This Lack of Color boater hat will keep you stylish and protected from those glorious sun rays.

City Bound

If you’re headed to a more metropolitan area, chances are your agenda is stacked. From exploring museums, parks, and architecture during the day to taking in a show or enjoying an amazing culinary experience at night, you’re going to be busy. And I didn’t even mention all the shopping:) Packing efficiently is essential. I mean, you really need to leave some room for all the goodies you’re sure to pick up on your trip. Bringing items that can perform a double duty is a wise choice. Here are some key pieces that transition easily from day to night and will have you looking like a fashion-savvy urbanite.

Flat Booties

This bootie is a staple for a woman who is constantly on the move.

These booties from The Archive are comfortable enough for walking the city streets yet sleek enough to dress up for a night on the town.

Leather Jacket

Freshen up everyday denim and jersey essentials with quality fabrics, giving you a casual street style.

A leather moto jacket adds instant cool to any outfit. This style from Current Air is so classic and has that “I’ve owned this forever” look.

High Waisted Jeans

Slim and trim with a sleek, second-skin fit and ankle-hitting length, the Chrissy is a high-rise skinny that nips in the waist, smooths the midsection and tones the legs.

These DL1961 Chrissy jeans smooth your midsection and legs while you explore the sights and sounds of the city. The soft black color and frayed hem are so chic, no one will know you’re a tourist.

Lightweight Sweater

Tiered ruffle sleeves make an architectural impact. This sweater is a dramatic alternative to your go-to knit when paired with weekend jeans.

Fashion girls from NYC to San Fran are rocking the ruffle sleeve trend. This Endless Rose sweater has just the right amount of drama without sacrificing comfort.

Day to Night Dress

black dress

A tunic dress works well with a jean jacket, denim shirt, cardigan, and more. It looks great with boots, sandals, even Vans!

This may be the perfect travel dress. Seriously. Wear this with sneakers during the day then booties for a more dressed up look in the evening. Done and done.

Crossbody Bag

A simple crossbody bag with a magnetic closure and single compartment that fits everything you really need will make travels a breeze. A removable shoulder strap to makes it the most versatile bag on your trip.

For security and ease, a hands-free bag is a must. This Silence + Noise crossbody is big enough to hold your wallet and phone while shopping, yet chic enough for your dressier outfits. Get yours at Urban Outfitters before they are gone!
